Real World Virgin Islands History

Please be careful when adding real-world information to this wiki page. The Dark Places Wiki is designed mostly as a resource for IC information. The brief history below is included primarily to give players inspiration for their characters.

The Virgin Islands is a small archipelago in the Caribbean Sea, half of which belongs to the United Kingdom and the other half is administered by the United States. It was originally christened Santa Ursula y Las Once Mil Virgenes, or St. Ursula and the One Thousand Virgins, a Catholic legend. The original tribes who inhabited the islands were rendered extinct by Columbus and his followers.

The ownership of the Virgin Islands changed hands many times throughout history - it has been controlled by the Dutch East India Company, Spain, France, Britain and the Netherlands at one time or another.

For centuries after the arrival of the Spanish, the economy of the Virgin Islands hinged on slavery and sugar plantations. When slavery was abolished in 1848, the economy took a drastic hit. It was mostly buoyed by pirates, who would occasionally hide from authorities on in and around the islands. It was only after World War II, nearly a century later, that the Virgin Islands was able to establish itself as a resort destination.

The Virgin Islands attracts mostly Kindred when it comes to supernaturals. An economy which hinges on outsiders coming in, spending lots of money and then leaving is a perfect feeding ground for a Kindred. Several leftovers from the pirate age have managed to create a comfortable home in the islands.
