Trier

Real World Trier History

Trier (French: Trèves; Luxembourgish: Tréier; Spanish: Tréveris; Latin: Augusta Treverorum) is a city in Germany on the banks of the Moselle River. It is the oldest city in Germany, founded in or before 16 BC. Trier is not the only city claiming to be Germany's oldest, but it is the only one that bases this assertion on having the longest history as a city, as opposed to a mere settlement or army camp.

Trier in the World of Darkness

Long ruled by the First Estate, Trier is home now to mostly Invictus and Acolyte Kindred, many of whom belong to the Jötunn Bloodline. Little is known about other supernatural creatures in the city.

Who's Who

  • Bolthorn - Duke of Trier. Though he does not currently reside in Trier, he and the rest of the Jötunn have held the city for the Invictus and the Circle of the Crone since approximately 700 c.e.

Customs and Rules

No particular customs exist, though visiting Kindred should certainly seek out the Jötunn Vakamen (Watchmen) to ensure they are not unwelcome in Trier.

Prehistory & Roman Rule, to approx 600 c.e.

Little is known of the city, save that it served as a base of operations for the Legio Mortuum in their efforts to quell the heathen Gangrel of Germania. Bolthorn makes mention of being Praetor here, and it's believed others of his line were present during this time.

Medieval Era, 600 c.e. to 1500 c.e.

Ruled by Khovros from approximately 700 c.e. to 800 c.e., Trier's court fell when they turned on the Prince and were subsequently driven from the city by the Frost Giants. By 1200 c.e. the vast majority of the Jötunn were in torpor in Trier, guarded by the youngest members of the line. Trier would be unhospitable to Kindred visitors for centuries to come.

The Renaissance and the Age of Enlightenment, 1500 c.e. to 1915 c.e.

Little changed during this period, though elders of the Jötunn spent more time awake and, therefore, received many more visitors during this period. Katherine Strauss, Captain Audrey Keel, Johanna Sutter, Leon Vogel, and others are known to have visited the area for one reason or another during this time.

The Great War and World War II, 1915 c.e. to 1945 c.e.

The Jötunn went to ground for the duration of the World Wars, avoiding the conflict and subsequently the hysteria associated with Hitler's regime.

Modern Day, 1945 c.e. to Present

Many elder Frost Giants have awakened in recent nights, and Trier has seen a subsequent rise in activity and Kindred visitors. It's believed that many of the line are now preparing to leave Trier and reenter Kindred society throughout the world.

Rumors

  • Seeking the Frost Giants for tutelage can be a deadly proposition of not adequately prepared, though many students have claimed that the danger was well worth it.
  • Oddly, no accounts of werewolves have been attributed to Trier.
