Real World Thebes History

Please be careful when adding real-world information to this wiki page. The Dark Places Wiki is designed mostly as a resource for IC information. The brief history below is included primarily to give players inspiration for their characters.

While not currently the capital of Egypt, Thebes was a marvelous city and the seat of Pharaohs in ancient times, even appearing in Homer's Illiad as 'hundred-gated Thebes.' It was the center for the cult of Amon, a major Egyptian deity. The Nile runs through the city, with temples on the west bank and the Necropolis and ancient tombs on the east bank. Thebes shares a name with another classical city in Greece - it should be noted the two are not the same.

The Romans who conquered Egypt renamed the city Diospolis Magna, which roughly translated means 'Great Seat of Zeus'. Under Roman rule, the city declined in importance, though it was still a major population center. It fared similarly under the Arabs.

In modern times, thanks to the preponderance of tombs and temples, Thebes is a magnet for Egyptologists and archaelogists. There is almost always a dig of some kind going on in Thebes. And while most of these expeditions are fully legal and above board, there is definitely a black market for Egyptian antiquities...

Rumors

Please use common sense when adding to this section or determining what your character knows or believes

  • Somewhere beneath Thebes is a great tomb where a fantastic treasure lies. Vampires dream of an ancient Kindred immune to the Fog of Eternity, Mages whisper of treasures from lost Atlantis buried with a forgotten Pharaoh, Changelings tell stories about an elixir that can wipe all traces of Arcadia from a person. There is no solid evidence to support these claims, but every few decades, some brave soul goes looking.
