Real World Sudan History

Please be careful when adding real-world information to this wiki page. The Dark Places Wiki is designed mostly as a resource for IC information. The brief history below is included primarily to give players inspiration for their characters.

The Sudan is the largest country in Africa, as well as being the largest Arab nation in the world. It has been inhabited for at least 600,000 years, and was known to the Egyptians as Kush, with whom they had a relationship which seesawed between antagonistic and friendly over the centuries.

Christianity was introduced to the area in the 6th century C.E. Islam also made several inroads - though while most now-Arab nations were conquered, the Sudan had a more peaceful proselytization that nevertheless led to a large percentage of the population converting. The Kingdom of Sinnar, also called the Blue Sultanate, was established in the 16th century C.E. and lasted until 1820, when Egypt staged a successful invasion of the country. The Sudan would be a part of Egypt until 1885, when an internal conflict of succession in the area brought the British, ostensibly to 'stabilize' the region.

While Egypt became a British protectorate, the Sudan fought back. Led by Muhammad ibn Abdalla, who called himself the 'Mahdi', or Enlightened One, his army fought to purify Islam and free the Sudan from foreigners. The revolt was successful, though short-lived. Ten years later, the Sudan would join Egypt as a British protectorate. Though many efforts were made to unite Egypt and Sudan, the British foiled all of them. Eventually, on January 1, 1956, the Sudan was made an independent nation.

Currently, the eastern portion of the Sudan, a province called Darfur, is embroiled in what some world leaders have called genocide and the worst humanitarian crisis in the 21st century. The internal conflict has spilled over the border, and the Sudan also now finds itself at war with Chad.

The Sudan in the World of Darkness

(Please make sure all information added to this section has been approved by the Dark Places on the Map ST)

Riddled with disease, starvation and violence, the Sudan draws the very hungry - for money, for blood, for power. The people are willing to accept any leader who can provide succor, no matter how monstrous he or she might otherwise be. There are a few bright lights of charity and hope, of people wishing to make a difference - more often than not, though, these sparks are extinguished quickly and violently.

Rumors

Please use common sense when adding to this section or determining what your character knows or believes

  • There was a great gathering of Kindred in the Sudan in the latter half of 2006. It is claimed that Alexander the Great made an appearance, claiming to have recently risen out of torpor. Whether or not he was who he claimed to be, he was obviously a Kindred of great power and a warlord to be treated gently with. [R]
  • One path to the Holy Grail leads through the Sudan, or so it is claimed [All venues].
