Real World Tangier History

Please be careful when adding real-world information to this wiki page. The Dark Places Wiki is designed mostly as a resource for IC information. The brief history below is included primarily to give players inspiration for their characters.

Tangier was founded in the early 5th century B.C.E. by colonists from Carthage. Myth has the founder of the city, Sufax, being a son of Hercules. After Rome demolished the Carthaginians, Tangier became a Roman colony. It briefly fell to Vandals before being absorbed into the Byzantine Empire.

Arabs conquered the city in 702, introducing Islam into the city. However, the city managed to retain some of it's Christian identity, and still exists as a see of the Roman Catholic Church.

The city was controlled by Portuguese from the late 15th century to 1661, when it was given to Charles II of England as part of Catherine of Breganza's dowry. The British had plans to develop the city - however, these plans were thwarted in 1679 when Sultan Moulay Ismail of Morocco attempted to seize the town. The British were forced to withdraw, razing the city as they left. The city was eventually rebuilt by Sultan Ismail.

The first American embassy was set up in Tangier under the Washington administration. Thanks to the location of the city, it became a central location for the European economic and political rivalries. In the 19th century, Kaiser Wilhelm almost triggered an international incident when he publicly expressed support for Morocco's continued independence, a move which earned him the ire of France. Tangier was eventually divided between France and Spain. Spain had almost complete control of the city during World War II, though at the end of the conflict it was returned to Morocco.

Tangier in the World of Darkness

(Please make sure all information added to this section has been approved by the Dark Places on the Map ST)

Despite the multitude of cultures and peoples who live in Tangier, it manages to be a relatively peaceful city. Long tradition has made it a safe house for spies, and nearly every nation has a few agents operating in Tangier. Interestingly enough, the romanticism of the city also attracts artists and other creative individuals, who find inspiration in the colorful diversity of the city.
