Real World Santiago History
Please be careful when adding real-world information to this wiki page. The Dark Places Wiki is designed mostly as a resource for IC information. The brief history below is included primarily to give players inspiration for their characters.
Santiago is the capital of Chile, named after St. James and one of the most modern cities in South America. It was founded in 1541 by Spanish explorers - no settlements were known to exist on the site before that. It was promptly razed by hostile natives, but the Spanish refused to be moved and rebuilt the city.
It was a small settlement for several centuries, whose only claim to fame was hosting the Chilean mint. In 1863, a local church caught fire during Mass and burned to the ground, killing approximately 2000 people. Chile declared its independence from Spain in 1810.
It was during the 20th century when the Chilean government made a concerted effort to develop the city and make it 'modern'. A library and museum were among the things constructed, as well as a financial district around the still-running mint. As a result, Santiago is one of the financial hubs of South America.
