Real World Rio de Janeiro History

Please be careful when adding real-world information to this wiki page. The Dark Places Wiki is designed mostly as a resource for IC information. The brief history below is included primarily to give players inspiration for their characters.

Rio de Janeiro is the capital city of Brazil, and perhaps most famous for having an annual Carnival celebration which rivals New Orleans' Mardi Gras in terms of sheer excess juxtaposed with a giant statue of Jesus overlooking the entire city. Portuguese is the language spoken most in Rio, though the huge influx of tourists who visit each year for the beaches and weather make it extremely cosmopolitan.

The area on which the city now stands was discovered by Portuguese sailors in 1502. Thanks to the bay, it quickly became a location both for resupplying exploratory vessels and a depot for smugglers. A settlement of French Huguenots and Swiss Calvinists was established in Rio, though did not last long. It was properly founded in 1555 as a base from which to oppose French settlers. This was ultimately successful, and the French were expelled from Brazil not long after.

The Portuguese used Rio as a docking point and trade location, which also attracted it's own fair share of pirates. Brazil declared its independence in 1822, and Rio was retained as the capital of the 'Empire of Brazil'. It persisted as a capital city until 1960.

Despite the sunny face Rio presents for tourists, it nevertheless has a very dark underbelly. The hillside favelas of Rio de Janeiro are some of the worst slums in the world, and there is a hefty trade in narcotics which passes through the city.
