Real World Orleans History
Please be careful when adding real-world information to this wiki page. The Dark Places Wiki is designed mostly as a resource for IC information. The brief history below is included primarily to give players inspiration for their characters.
Located in north-central France on the Loire River, this is also city after which New Orleans is named. It existed in prehistory as Cenabum, an important city to the Celtic Druids. It was conquered by Julius Caesar as part of his Gallic campaigns, and eventually renamed "the city of Aurelian" after a Roman Emperor, which evolved into 'Orleans'.
Being a point of strategic interest as the closest city to Paris, Orleans was fought bitterly over during the Hundred Years' War. It was famously liberated by St. Joan of Arc, who even today is referred to as the 'Maid of Orleans.' When St. Joan was finally captured by the English, the citizens of Orleans raised and paid her ransom, though the money was confiscated and St. Joan was not returned.
After the city recovered from the Hundred Years War, it has persisted as a center of culture and occasional military strategy.

- There is a relic housed in one of the churches in Orleans - a lock of hair cut from St. Joan of Arc after the successful campaign to free the city from the English. This lock of hair is reputed to protect the keeper from any supernatural who wishes them harm - especially supernaturals of English descent. Those who would crusade against supernaturals often seek a blessing from the priest of this church - though no one is sure exactly which church houses the relic.
