21st Century

• 2000 Mage Gamble is in Nigeria with his partner Enigma training a young cabal of Mages. After a run-in with a Seer pylon, Gamble, Enigma, and their cabal depart Nigeria and head eastward, planning to follow the Silk Road to Asia. When he is next seen again, Gamble is in Ko Pha Ngan, and his companions are nowhere to be found.

-Nigeria is the original home of the sentient Cryptid race known today as the Lazarenes. The name is not their original African name, but one they were given by slave traders who noted their unusual powers. Lazarenes appear african but are born naturally with ridges which resemble ritual scarification, and it is believed that many forms of ritual scarification in Africa may have been attempts to tap into the Lazarene's natural powers.

Lazarenes are born with the magical ability to rise from the dead when killed through injury, which made them feared opponents to other Mortal tribes. The extent of their magical regenerative abilities is unknown, but it is known that they can die of old age or illness. The Lazarenes arrogantly refer to humans as "The Fragile People" who can only die once.
The Lazarenes were largely depopulated in Africa when the Yoruba people fought them in battle, collected their bodies from the battlefield, and then sold them into slavery when they rose again.  The Lazarenes were largely depopulated from Africa and brought to America by the slave trade. Most Lazarenes escaped slavery and made their way northward via the Underground Railroad. The species is now found almost exclusively in Canada.
