Real World Mexico City History

Please be careful when adding real-world information to this wiki page. The Dark Places Wiki is designed mostly as a resource for IC information. The brief history below is included primarily to give players inspiration for their characters.

Mexico City has been a capital city since it was founded in 1325 c.e. by Aztec settlers, who named it Tenochtitlan. They quickly began constructing a system of engineering and irrigation to make the city, located in the middle of Lake Texcoco, habitable for humans. Upon the arrival of the Spanish, it did not fall until after a 79 day siege in 1521, which reduced most of the city to rubble. It was made the seat of the Spanish colonial government in 1524 after it had been rebuilt. In 1810, the Mexican War for Independence began. Though this conflict lasted over a decade, Mexico City was again able to withstand the worst of the fighting, being named capital of the newly created federal republic in 1824. A second revolution was sparked in 1910, following a corrupt election which put an unpopular leader in power for his fifth consecutive term. Perhaps the most notorious revolutionary from this era is Pancho Villa, who engaged in Mexican-American border raids and was hunted without success by the American Rough Riders.

Mexico City is a fascinating blend of native, Spanish and other European influences. From regal baroque architecture to open-air markets, Mexico City is colorful, complex and dyamic. Recent events of note in the history of the city are the 1968 Olympics being hosted in Mexico City (marred by the Tlatelolco Massacre a few days prior in which scores of students were killed) and a massive earthquake in 1985 (estimated to have killed at least 5,000 people and displaced many more).

Mexico City in the World of Darkness

The dynamism of Mexico City's mortals is reflected in the various supernatural communities who live there. From Acolytes of the Circle who still offer blood sacrifices to Huitzilpotchtli to Invictus descended from conquistadores, they all find a place somewhere in the shadows.

Mexico City will be the setting for the Camarilla Requiem game at Gen Con Indy 2008.

Thinking his life was over, that the Spaniards had retaliated, he instead met the Kindred who would later become his sire, Sullivan Sweeney (Al Murphy, US2002045468). He was ghouled and Blood Bound to Sweeney, then released with the knowledge that if he did what was asked of him he would find his revenge.
  • 1810-1821: Alejandro works for Sweeney, all in the name of the Mexican Revolution. He finally gets his chance to exact revenge on Victor del Morte - at a fort set up by the Spanish army in Laredo. In the heat of battle, however, Alejandro discovers Victor had been inducted into the dance of the dead. The fort burns to the ground - many Spanish soldiers are slain, but Victor's body is not among them. Alejandro returns to Dolores, where he is rewarded by his master, Embraced for being such a faithful retainer on the same night Mexico achieves independence: September 16, 1821. Celebration for Alejandro was short-lived, though. as he was sent off to learn the ways of the Invictus.

Rumors

Please use common sense when adding to this section or determining what your character knows or believes

  • There is a strange group of creatures roaming Mexico who are somehow half vampire and half werewolf. Perhaps a werewolf bit a vampire, or it was the other way around. Either way, they possess curious abilities which are of neither group and have a strong presence in Mexico City.
  • Pancho Villa may have been Embraced before his death, though no one knows for sure what clan.
  • Because of all the death that has happened in and around Mexico City, from Aztec sacrifices to Spanish genocide to the many wars and conflicts, it's one of the most haunted cities on the map.
