Real World Lima History

Please be careful when adding real-world information to this wiki page. The Dark Places Wiki is designed mostly as a resource for IC information. The brief history below is included primarily to give players inspiration for their characters.

Lima is currently the largest city in Peru, as well as it's capital. In pre-Colombian times, the area was inhabited by several tribes who were vassals of the Incan Empire. After Pizzaro had pretty thoroughly conquered the area, he founded Lima in the valley of the Rimac River in 1535. It quickly became an important city in the Spanish Empire - the first Western university, the Universidad de San Marcos, was founded in Lima in 151, as well as the establishment of a Roman Catholic diocese in 1541 which became an archdiocese five years later.

During the 17th century, Lima flourished as part of a complex web of trade cities, including European cities and the Philippines. It suffered two major earthquakes, though, which damaged the city significantly. The thriving trade in the city also attracted numerous pirates - the city eventually had to be walled to protect against them.

Lima declared independence in 1821, though economic growth was slowed by various wars and political instability. The population exploded in the mid-20th century as immigrants from the Andes mountains came to live in the city - more than Lima could reasonably accommodate, giving rise to shanty towns at the outskirts of the city proper.
