Real World Kiev History

Please be careful when adding real-world information to this wiki page. The Dark Places Wiki is designed mostly as a resource for IC information. The brief history below is included primarily to give players inspiration for their characters.

Kiev is the largest city in the Ukraine, and a major cultural center for Eastern Europe & Russia. It was believed to have been founded by four brothers sometime in the 5th century as a trading post. During the 9th and 10th centuries, it was a major center of the empire of the Rus. In 1290, it was reputed to be one of the largest cities in the world - which no doubt made it a tempting target for the Mongols, who completely destroyed it. The greatly diminished city was conquered again in 1321 by the Lithuanians. In the 17th century, it fell under Russian control.

As a Russian city, Kiev was a major religious center. Many Eastern European pilgrims chose Kiev as their destination, and the church had a strong presence in the city. It was not until the 19th century that Kiev began to become an economic center, as well. The Industrial Revolution eventually made Kiev the third most important city in Eastern Europe.

The start of World War I and the Russian Revolution marked the beginning of a chaotic time for Kiev. It was, for a brief moment, the capital of the independent state of the Ukraine. Between 1918 and 1920, political control of Kiev changed sixteen times. It finally settled as a city in the Ukranian Soviet Socialist Republic, a nation of the USSR. The fortunes of Kiev rose and fell with that of the USSR, including having it's educated class nearly wiped out in Stalinist purges. World War II was another chaotic time for Kiev, though it escaped virtually unscathed.

The Chernobyl disaster happened approximately 100 kilometers from Kiev, though a lucky wind kept most of the fallout away from the city. Kiev gained independence from Russia in 1991 with the formation of the Ukranian free state.
