Real World Jerusalem History
Please be careful when adding real-world information to this wiki page. The Dark Places Wiki is designed mostly as a resource for IC information. The brief history below is included primarily to give players inspiration for their characters.
Jerusalem enjoys a unique position as a holy city for three major world religions: Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Pilgrims visit the city year-round to bask in it's attributed holiness and pay homage to their chosen gods.
Jerusalem has been inhabited since the Paleolithic. During the Judaic Empire of King David and his son King Solomon, Jerusalem was their capital city. It was during the reign of King Solomon that the first great temple was constructed. When Israel was conquered by Assyrians (the Babylonian Captivity), Jerusalem swelled with refugees from neighboring lands. Solomon's temple was razed to the ground. When King Cyrus I rose to power, he allowed the Jews to return to their homeland. The temple was rebuilt.
During the Roman period, Jerusalem (and all of Israel) was a thorn in the Empire's side. Refusing to honor the Roman Empire as a god on Earth was the crux of the conflict, though the Jewish people also sought self-rule. Eventually, the entire nation rose up in revolt. They were eventually crushed by the Romans, who reduced the temple again to rubble. Only a single wall, now called the Wailing Wall, remains. Another consequence of the revolt was the banning of Jews from Jerusalem, which started the Diaspora as Jews sought other places in Europe and Asia to live.
After the fall of the Romans and the Byzantines after them, Jerusalem was ruled by Persians for a time, until the 7th century C.E., when it was conquered by Muslims. The Muslims allowed the Jews back into the city, as well as signing a treaty with Christian leaders to protect sites of interest to Christians.
In 1099, Europeans came banging on Jerusalem's gates during the First Crusade. The majority of the city's Muslim and Jewish residents were slaughtered, and many Christians as well. For the next several hundred years, Jerusalem would change hands between European and Muslim rulers. It was finally conquered by Ottomans in the 16th century C.E. In 1917, the British Army captured Jerusalem and added the city to their extensive Middle East holdings.
In 1948, the State of Israel was formed and Jerusalem named it's capital.
Jerusalem in the World of Darkness

Thanks to it's long, near-mythic history, Jerusalem is a city which draws the supernatural to it. It is rumored that King Solomon was a master of demons and used his power over them to build the First Temple. The Society of Freemasons claims descent from Hiram, the architect of the same temple.
Kindred of all stripes gravitate to the city, while Mages come seeking keys to the hidden wisdom of King Solomon.
