Real World Hong Kong History
Please be careful when adding real-world information to this wiki page. The Dark Places Wiki is designed mostly as a resource for IC information. The brief history below is included primarily to give players inspiration for their characters.
Hong Kong has been inhabited by humans since the Paleolithic. It was incorporated into China during the Qin Dynasty and used mostly as a trading port and naval base. It was first visited by Europeans in the early 16th century. Hong Kong - and the rest of China - remained independent until the Emperor refused to import opium into China, which in 1839 resulted in the First Opium War. It was occupied by British in 1841, and the city was formally ceded to the British Empire in the Treaty of Nanking. The city traded hands a few more times until 1898, when Britain signed a 99-year lease for Hong Kong and the surrounding territory.
Under British rule, Hong Kong prospered as a center of trade between the East and West. The Japanese briefly controlled Hong Kong during World War II, but the city reverted back to the British after the Japanese defeat. Though nearly half of Hong Kong's population had been lost as a result of the war, it was soon recovered by mainland Chinese fleeing the new Communist government.
In 1997, Hong Kong reverted back to control of the Chinese. Though the Chinese government had promised a degree of self-rule to the city, as well as reassurances that the capitalist economy could continue to operate, many residents of the city decided to emigrate. Despite the Asian financial crises and the outbreak of bird flu, Hong Kong has nevertheless persisted as a bastion of trade and prosperity.

- Hong Kong is currently believed to be the central operating area of a Triad known as the Four Seas. Some high ranking members of the Four Seas may have at least peripheral knowledge of Kindred, as they hired one to act as their champion in an underground martial arts tournament in Hamilton, Ontario recently.
