Real World Hermopolis History

Please be careful when adding real-world information to this wiki page. The Dark Places Wiki is designed mostly as a resource for IC information. The brief history below is included primarily to give players inspiration for their characters.

Hermopolis has existed as an urban center since the days of the Pharaohs. It was once at the border of Upper and Lower Egypt, and was famous for being the resort town of it's day. Primarily worshipped there were Typhon (an aspect of Set) and Thoth, the god of wisdom (the name of the city comes from 'Hermes', the Greek analog of Thoth).

It managed to escape most of the Egyptian and Roman wars, though when under control of the Muslims, it was plundered for building materials. The Roman Catholic and Coptic Christian churches both maintain small dioceses within Hermopolis.

Currently, Hermpolis is a city in a state of ruin. It is now a rather small and insignificant city in Egypt, important only to a few archaeologists. There is a small open air museum to Thoth in the city, as well as the remains of a temple built to him during the Ptolemaic period. The population is rather reduced from what it was, and it is impossible to escape the haunting feeling of glory days long disappeared when walking through Hermopolis.
