Real World Haiti History
Please be careful when adding real-world information to this wiki page. The Dark Places Wiki is designed mostly as a resource for IC information. The brief history below is included primarily to give players inspiration for their characters.
In pre-Colombian times, the island now known as Hispaniola was inhabited by the Taino-Arawak tribe. It was on this island that Columbus famously landed in 1492, founding the settlement of La Navidad. The city was destroyed by the natives, and the Spanish simply set up La Isabela elsewhere and proceeded to crush the opposition. As a result of being the first Native American population to encounter Europeans (aside from the Norse), the Taino are now an extinct people.
While Spain settled the eastern half of Hispaniola, France claimed the western portion. Both governments imported African slaves to help sustain the plantation economy being set up. If any Taino managed to survive the Spanish conquest, they were gradually absorbed into the African slave population.
The Spanish and French often came into conflict over territory on Hispaniola, which culminated in a protracted war and the Treaty of Ryswick in 1697, which delineated firm borders. The French solidified their claim to west Hispaniola, and named it Saint-Domingue. Saint-Domingue was to become the richest French colony for almost a century. However, inspired by the French Revolution, the inhabitants of Saint-Domingue soon wanted their own freedom. The slave revolt (precipitated by a voudoun ritual to Ezili Danto) began in 1791. In 1793, slavery was abolished. However, Napoleon showed up several years later, attempting to return Saint-Domingue to the status quo. His army was repelled, though, and Saint-Domingue changed it's name to Haiti when it declared independence in 1804.
However, Haiti was rife with discord, as coup after coup ensured the country would be nearly perpetually unstable. The US occupied Haiti from 1915 to 1934. The Duvalier family ruled as dictators from 1957 to 1986 - most famous for the Tonton Macoute, or death squad which operated under the direction of Papa Doc Duvalier.
Haiti has achieved in modern days a semblance of both democracy and stability.
Haiti in the World of Darkness
(Please make sure all information added to this section has been approved by the Dark Places on the Map ST)
Haiti is 80% Catholic, 20% Protestant and 100% voudoun. The religion is a unique mix of African tribal shamanism and European Christianity. Though any area which imported large numbers of African slaves has a similar faith (voodoo in New Orleans, santeria in Brazil, etc), nowhere is voudoun so entrenched and a part of the culture as Haiti. Papa Doc Duvalier was reputed to be a master of voudoun, who achieved power because he was not afraid to curse his enemies.
The mystery of voudoun draws supernaturals of all sorts to Haiti.
