Europe

The cradle of Western civilization, Europe has a long recorded history. Inhabited by Germano-Celts in prehistory, most of Europe was conquered by the Romans - including an especially long and arduous campaign in Gaul (France), which earned Julius Caesar the respect and power he would later use to become Emperor. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Europe was plunged into an age of chaos and anarchy that would later be referred to as the Dark Ages - characterized by feudalism and the Black Death, which reduced the population of Europe by a full third.
During the Age of Exploration and the Colonization period, Europe dominated the globe. Though their influence faded post WWII, they are still nevertheless a force to be reckoned with.

Europe
In Greek mythology, Europa was a Phoenician princess who was abducted by Zeus in bull form and taken to the island of Crete, where she gave birth to Minos. For Homer, Europe (Greek: Εὐρώπη Eurṓpē; see also List of traditional Greek place names) was a mythological queen of Crete, not a geographical designation. Later Europa stood for mainland Greece, and by 500 BC its meaning had been extended to lands to the north.
