Real World Dominican Republic History

Please be careful when adding real-world information to this wiki page. The Dark Places Wiki is designed mostly as a resource for IC information. The brief history below is included primarily to give players inspiration for their characters.

The Dominican Republic is on the island of Hispaniola, to the east of Haiti. It was the location of the first European settlement after Columbus landed on the island. It was populated by a tribe of people who called themselves the Tainos. It is estimated that there were anywhere between one hundred thousand and two million Tainos living on the island when the Spanish arrived. Accurate numbers are difficult, since the Taino culture was effectively exterminated as part of the opening salvo of the Spanish conquest of the New World.

The Spanish turned the island into a plantation state, importing large numbers of African slaves to work them. The Africans and Tainos intermixed, and most Dominicans have a tripartite ancestry as a result. The French gained control of the entire island in 1795, though they lost it again several years later. Over the next centuries, control of Santo Domingo would shift from European countries to self-rule to Haiti and back to Europe. In 1838, a secret society was formed called La Trinitaria, for the express purpose of gaining self-rule for Santo Domingo, without any foreign influence. In 1844, independence from Haiti was declared, though the island would invade several times between then and up to 1856. The island reverted to Spanish control yet again in 1861. This move was violently opposed.

In 1870, the American Senate came one vote short of annexing Santo Domingo, and instead the island became independent yet again. However, this independence did not mean a stable government, and Santo Domingo was rife with internal problems and severe instability as governments changed almost by the year. In 1916, the island was occupied by American Marines, ostensibly to return stability but also to protect American interests in the nearby Panama Canal. The troops were finally withdrawn in 1930.

Currently, the Dominican Republic enjoys a certain level of stability and peace. They are now ruled by a President, and there have been several successful transfers of power.

Dominican Republic in the World of Darkness

Like Haiti, the currents of voudoun run deep in the Dominican Republic. Nearly every resident is a practitioner or patronizes houngans and mambos for their spiritual needs. Carthian vampires will no doubt find Santo Domingo a welcome testing ground for their political theory.

Rumors

Please use common sense when adding to this section or determining what your character knows or believes

  • There is a mysterious figure living outside the capital city, called Mama Kit. She is definitely a respected and powerful voudoun mambo, though whether she is simply a gifted mortal or some other supernatural creature is not known. However, she is hip deep in the occult and nearly every supernatural or quasi supernatural creature has asked her for advice.
