Real World Cairo History
Please be careful when adding real-world information to this wiki page. The Dark Places Wiki is designed mostly as a resource for IC information. The brief history below is included primarily to give players inspiration for their characters.
"Ten measures of magic came into the world. Nine were given to Egypt, and the rest of the world has one measure to share."
Cairo was founded in the 10th Century C.E. by Muslim conquerors, at the southernmost end of the great Nile Delta. Bitter crusades were fought over the city, which stood firm until 1250. In that year, the rebellious Mamluk slaves overthrew the old government and instated their own, retaining Cairo as their capital. The Mamluks reigned until 1517, when the Ottomans assumed control of Egypt. Ottoman control was in turn broken in 1798 by Napoleon's army. His victory was short-lived, however, as Egypt regained her independence in 1805. In 1882, the British added Egypt to their long list of colonies, a status which remained until Egyptian independence was achieved in 1922.
Cairo is the closest city to the Great Pyramids of Giza. A few miles south are ancient Egyptian cities of Memphis and Saqqara, which were the capital city and necropolis of the Ancient Egyptian civilization. Though Cairo is young for an Egyptian city, it has inherited much of the mystique from Memphis and Saqqara.
Cairo in the World of Darkness
"Ten measures of magic came into the world. Nine were given to Egypt, and the rest of the world has one measure to share."
Cairo is a magnet for the supernatural, especially those with a strong interest in magic. Mages make pilgrimages to the ancient pyramids, while Acolytes, Sanctified and Dragons study hidden grimoires in grottoes beneath the bustling city streets. The Autumn Court of the Lost thrives in Cairo, feeding off dreams of viziers and priest-kings. Away from the eyes of the mortal officials, there is a brisk black market in relics and antiquities.
