Real World Buenos Aires History

Please be careful when adding real-world information to this wiki page. The Dark Places Wiki is designed mostly as a resource for IC information. The brief history below is included primarily to give players inspiration for their characters.

Buenos Aires is the capital city of Argentina, on the western part of South America. It was discovered by the Spanish in 1516. Twenty years later, Spanish settlers attempted to live in the region, though attacks by hostile natives made that an eventual impossibility. The settlement was abandoned in 1541, and would not be revisited until 1580.

During the colonial period, the Spanish ruled that all goods must pass through Lima, so a proper tax could be levied on them. As a result, Buenos Aires became a thriving hub for pirates and smugglers. This heritage persists even today, as Buenos Aires is seen as a far more liberal city than the outlying areas of Argentina. Argentina declared independence from Spain in 1816. It was blockaded twice by French forces, though it refused to fall.

In the beginning of the 20th century, Argentina was a popular destination for European immigrants, especially Italians (and later, many low and mid ranking Nazis fleeing the fall of the Third Reich would end up in or around Buenos Aires). Thanks to the pampas which are ideal for grazing cattle, Argentina has it's own 'cowboy culture'.
