Real World Budapest History
Please be careful when adding real-world information to this wiki page. The Dark Places Wiki is designed mostly as a resource for IC information. The brief history below is included primarily to give players inspiration for their characters.
One of the premier cities of Central Europe, Budapest started out as a Germano-Celtic settlement in prehistoric times. It was conquered by the Romans in the 1st century c.e., who called it Aquincum and turned it into a major regional center. Abandoned when the Roman Empire declined and fell, it was settled by Hungarians in the 9th and 10th centuries, who called it Buda (with it's sister city, Pesht, across the river). In 1361, it became the capital of Hungary.
Buda Pesht thrived during the reign of King Matthias Corvinius, responsible for founding a great library there, second only to the Vatican Library. The city was occupied by Turks until the end of the seventeenth century, when it began a climb back to greatness. It became the capital of the Austrio-Hungarian Empire and the three cities of Buda, Obuda and Pesht were merged to form one grand city, Budapest.
Budapest's golden era was cut dramatically short with the onset of World War I. As the seat of the Austrio-Hungarian Empire, it fell when that empire collapsed with the Treaty of Versailles. Decades later, it was the center of several pitched battles during World War II, including the eponymous Battle of Budapest. After the war, the Iron Curtain fell across Hungary and Budapest became yet another city in the Soviet Bloc - though, perhaps, one of the more prosperous. The Soviets abandoned the city in 1991, and Hungary is now part of both NATO and the EU.
