Real World Bucharest History

Please be careful when adding real-world information to this wiki page. The Dark Places Wiki is designed mostly as a resource for IC information. The brief history below is included primarily to give players inspiration for their characters.

Bucharest is the capital city of Romania, and is a relatively young city in Europe. It was first mentioned in 1459 as the seat for Vlad III - a.k.a. Vlad the Impaler, a.k.a. Vlad Dracul, a.k.a. Dracula. Before then, it was likely a small settlement or village. Bucharest was burned by Ottoman turks at the beginning of the 17th century, though soon rebuilt and became a center for the Wallachian court in 1698.

Bucharest was a battleground for the next several centuries. It was plague-ridden at various times, occupied three times by Hapsburgs and Russians apiece, not to mention a fairly bloody rebellion in 1848. Fire destroyed nearly a third of the city in 18747. In 1861, Wallachia and Moldavia were united to become Romania, and Bucharest was named the capital. This signaled a period of development and prosperity for Bucharest, which was then known as the "Paris of the East." This was short-lived, however, for Bucharest was occupied by Germans during WWI and bombed by Allies during WWII.

Nicolas Ceaucescu rose to power in the mid sixties, and destroyed much of old Bucharest to pave the way for Communism. Revolution broke out in 1989 and overthrew the Ceaucescu regime. Currently, Bucharest is struggling to re-establish itself as a city of import.
