Bogota is the capital of Colombia, and the most populous city in the country. It's original name was Bacata, which means 'planted fields' in the language of the Muiscas, who inhabited the region before the Spanish arrived. The western city was founded in 1535 and called 'Santa Fe de Bacata,' which eventually shifted to simply 'Bogota'. It quickly became a center for Spanish rule in the region.

Colombia threw off the Spanish in 1810, but was re-annexed in 1816. In 1819, Simon de Bolivar led the battle which won Colombia it's freedom for good.

Colombia's recent history has been marked by turmoil and deeply entrenched corruption. One of Colombia's major exports is cocaine, and the drug lords are some of the most powerful men in the nation. Though the government of Colombia is making efforts to oust the drug lords, it is slow progress.
