Real World Bahamas History

Please be careful when adding real-world information to this wiki page. The Dark Places Wiki is designed mostly as a resource for IC information. The brief history below is included primarily to give players inspiration for their characters.

The Bahamas is an archipelago of approximately seven hundred island and thousands of cays in the Caribbean, in between Florida and Cuba. The predominant language is English. Populated in prehistory by Tainos migrating from the larger islands to the south, the ethnic group at the time Columbus discovered them were called the Lucayans. Within two decades of making contact with European exploreres, Lucayan culture had been utterly destroyed through starvation, plague, warfare and forced enslavement of the survivors. The islands laid fallow until 17th century when Englishmen looking for freedom found the Bahamas.

From 1670 to 1718, thanks to lax colonial rule, the Bahamas became a haven for pirates - especially the infamous Blackbeard. During the American Revolution, the Bahamas (as the site of major British shipping interests) became a target for naval battles. For a brief period, the ownership of the islands was contested by the British, Americans and Spanish until the 1793 Treaty of Versailles, which reaffirmed British rule. In 1973, the Bahamas earned their full independance.
