1802: British open Consulate in Baghdad. One of the first appointees is Arthur Lowell, who brings his young son George with him to learn of other cultures.

1808: George Lowell leaves Baghdad after a vicious fight with his father, disillusioned with politics and business by Islam. He travels to Basra.

1831: The Mamluks, last survivors of the Ottoman purges, are overthrown; Baghdad, Basra and Mosul pass directly into the hands of the Turks. Deaths and murders become commonplace, and rumours begin to circulate with the superstitious native of a monster that came from Egypt with the Turks.
