Real World Alexandria History
Please be careful when adding real-world information to this wiki page. The Dark Places Wiki is designed mostly as a resource for IC information. The brief history below is included primarily to give players inspiration for their characters.
Alexandria is named after Alexander the Great, who founded the city after conquering Egypt. The city was once the jewel of the ancient world. It boasted the great Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Medieval World - not to mention the Great Library of Alexandria, which was the largest library in the ancient world and contained many texts now lost.
Within a generation of it's founding, Alexandria grew to be one of the largest cities in the ancient world, larger even than Carthage. It was also home to the largest Jewish community in the world, and is where the Septuagint was translated. It was the capital of Egypt during the reign of the Ptolemies. Over the centuries, the city was destroyed and rebuilt several times by invading armies and even a tsunami once. In the 7th century C.E., Alexandria was conquered by Muslims, who burned the Great Library to the ground.
Alexandria persisted as a city in the Ottoman Empire until 1798, when Napoleon marched into the city and occupied it with French forces. This lasted only 3 years, for the British conquered the city in 1801 as part of their campaign to conquer Egypt.
In 1954, Alexandria was the target of a bombing campaign launched by Israeli forces.

Rumors
Please use common sense when adding to this section or determining what your character knows or believes
- When the Muslim forces were marching on the city in the 7th century C.E., many knew ahead of time that if the city fell, the Great Library was doomed. Whether it was a group of Mages or a group of Ordo Dracul is unclear (or perhaps both groups worked together), but they managed to save many of the more obscure texts from destruction. Other esoteric information was smuggled out in the form of symbolic pictures, which evolved to become the modern Tarot deck.
- The catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa are a gateway to a particularly long-lasting and powerful covey of Belial's Brood. Though the exact membership has changed and shifted over the years, the covey itself has survived for several centuries.
