Real World Addis Ababa History
Please be careful when adding real-world information to this wiki page. The Dark Places Wiki is designed mostly as a resource for IC information. The brief history below is included primarily to give players inspiration for their characters.
Addis Ababa is the most populous city in Ethiopia, as well as being its capital. It has also been called the 'Capital of Africa' at times, due to its historical role in culture and diplomacy. The city is also known for being exceptionally cosmopolitan - at least eighty separate ethnic groups have a significant presence in the city.
The modern city was founded in 1886 by Empress Taytu Betul and King Menelik II. Despite the 'official' founding date, however, archaeological evidence suggests the area was inhabited before the construction of the city - indeed, many archaeologists theorize that humanity's genesis was in Ethiopia, making Addis Ababa and the surrounding area the longest-inhabited region on the planet.
In 1936, Italians invaded Ethiopia, killed one million inhabitants with mustard gas and claimed the area as part of Italian East Africa. Five years to the day later, they were finally expelled from the nation and Emperor Haile Selassie re-assumed his throne (Selassie is quite a powerful figure in his own right - he led the fight not only for Ethiopian independence, but for African unity. He is considered by adherents of Rastafarianism to be an incarnation of God).

Rumors
Please use common sense when adding to this section or determining what your character knows or believes
- Haile Selassie is not dead. He Awakened as a Mage at age sixteen. His magical powers are precisely why the Rastafarians believe him to be an incarnation of God. When he concluded that he had done as much as he possibly could for Ethiopia and that it was now time to let the younger generation take power, he faked his own death. If Ethiopia ever needs him, though, he will be there.
- As the first humans emerged from Ethiopia, so did the first Kindred find their own birth here. It is rumored that the oldest vampire in existence, a creature almost five thousand years old, sleeps somewhere beneath the bustling city.
